Meetings Matter…And So Do Digital Connections

Seth Godin’s post saying “No More Big Events” is way off the mark. He even comments that if people would use the digital alternatives that people would see the value. That is the problem. People prefer people to posts and digital feeds. It’s been said that life today is like sipping through a straw at a fire hydrant. All these channels become white noise and we crave to turn them off.

At a meeting, we often do. We come face-to-face with diversity of thought, find synergy in the hallways or over coffee, explore relevant trends and best practices, bridge past our differences, and yes form relationships that make selling more likely. Just because I can listen to a singer on my iPod doesn’t mean I don’t want the experience of seeng that singer live. The channels of knowing and impacting others are additive, not mutually exclusive.

Instead of ending big meetings, try structuring them to improve their value. I have always valued Seth’s provocative comments, but this one is off the mark.

I agree with Scott McKain’s comment on his blog (http://mckainviewpoint.com/?p=1774), “It’s also about the importance of interaction with members of our tribe.” I bet even Seth isn’t quite as populare with his own tribe today.
