Daily Video Log Highlights Value of Every Day

On New Year’s Day, my wife and I drove to San Diego for a family day. There were four generations of Paulsons gathered to celebrate Christmas and a new year…with a couple of birthdays thrown into the mix. On the drive from LA, we listened to Dennis Prager on KLAC 870 talk radio. His “Best of Dennis” radio broadcast proved to be a thought provoking one for me. He affirmed the value of New Year’s resolutions and talked to people whose resolutions had made a difference. As I have always said, setting goals and communicating those goals to others increases the likelihood that you really change. He was proving that anew!

Dennis went on to talk about his own desire to journal more consistently. He commented on how many years of journaling he had missed, but was confronted by the choice of not waiting any longer to start. I could relate with many stop and start journaling efforts in diaries and with computer files. But at least I had some entries through the years. As a result of the program, I resolved to unite them into one computerized journal for safe keeping. It also stimulated a renewed commitment to keep my journal on my computer desktop…and writing even short entries to keep the habit going more consistently.

But it was his mention of a daily video log that caught my fancy! I carry my handy Flip Video with me on the road and had it with me that day.  You never know when you are going to want to capture a moment, but what about the decision to make a daily video log that captures 364 days in the life of MOI? What’s in a year? Why not document it along with any insights or lessons learned?

The more I thought about it, the more excited I became. My first video log was recorded on January 1st. I took time to honor my parents and the importance of family in my life. My video log was launched, and I haven’t missed a day since. I’m sure some days will be more exciting than others; some insights worth sharing…and some not.

But by doing my daily log, I’ve already learned the value of intentionally living my day. One chooses one’s attitude. As a happy optimist, I choose to look for the gifts in every day. Psalm 118:24 says it well, “This is a day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” A day counts; it’s a gift from God. It’s not to be wasted but lived. Looking for what I am going to log about makes me acknowledge and look for that day’s special value…every day.

OK, It’s time to put up or shut up. I’ve posted my first week’s collection of entries in my daily log on YouTube. I will be adding a log every week.

If this inspires you to do the same, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. All it takes is a commitment, a Flip Video and a small stand to set up the camera for self-entries.

Let me know what you think. I’m open to suggestions. After all, I’ve got over 350 videos yet to do!
