“Stand By Me” Speaks to a World in Need of Community

As I discussed in The Optimism Advantage, music and community are critical to maintaining your own optimism advantage. No song communicates that better than the classic standard “Stand By Me,” originally released in 1955 by The Staple Singers and released again in 1961 by The Drifters. When I watched and listened to this video montage of artists and musicians contributing to this performance of “Stand by Me,” I had to share it with my readers.

On a day after an election in America that has resulted in a repudiation of big government and more entitlement spending, it does not change that fact that true community is critical to us all. If government isn’t the answer, an empowered and caring community must fill the void. Government is detached and impersonal. Locally, we get to touch each other and make a difference where it counts. In the coming months, there will still be people out of work who will need community. May you stand by each other as we try to rekindle the American Dream and create jobs. If we can’t afford endless government handouts, we better be ready to provide a hand up to those in need.

Yes, take a stand and live “Stand by Me” where you live! By serving others, you will serve yourself and tap the optimism such actions and attitudes create.
