Start Your “Optimism Advantage” Book Club to Promote Learning

A recent client purchased The Optimism Advantage for all the participants attending an in-house program on “Influencing Up and Across the Organization.”

Training doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s more important to have a process that translates what you learn into implementation on the job. If it is true that 80% of the training we get on the jobs comes from co-workers, why not create a team book club to take advantage of the great books that are out there with information teams can use to drive their change focus. In this case, I’m just glad to see that the team started by focusing on my new book!

Here is the process they are using combining reading and discussion board posts to collect the “Keepers” worth learning and applying. I hope in the future, readers using this process will comment on its effectiveness. But, for now, here is the message that went out to all reading The Optimism Advantage:

I would like to invite you to join the “Optimism Advantage Book Club” and to share your “Keeper Moments” from the reading. My thought is to create a discussion board on our Strategy Team Share Point Tab under the “Keeper Moments” Section. The purpose of this discussion board is to provide a place for newsgroup-style discussions and for managing discussion threads that ensure only approved posts appear.

The book has 15 chapters. Let me know if you’re interested, and I’ll assigned you the chapters to share and post. If you decide not to participate (which is totally cool), you are more than welcome to be engaged by viewing and/or replying to the postings. I will set everyone on “Alerts” and you’ll receive an automated e-mail once entries are made. If you prefer not to be notified, please let me know.

If you decide to join, your action item would be:
• Read your assigned chapter
• Be a “Special Guest Blogger” by posting an entry (this should take no more than 5-10 minutes to write) of your assigned chapter on the HR Strategy SharePoint
• Guidelines for your entry (choose one or all):
1. 2-3 Keeper Moments from the Chapter
2. Most significant part of the chapter you think the team should be aware
3. If what you read can be applied to the workplace and how, why or why not

Instructions on posting your entry in the Strategy Share Point:
• When you’re in the Strategy Share Point Page
• Click on “Keeper Moments”
• Click on New “Discussions”
• In the “Title” Field, type in your assigned chapter (e.g. Chapter 1)
• In the body: type in your entry or “Keeper Moments”
• Click Ok to submit

Please let me know if you’re interested by using the voting buttons above or have any questions. I will take the liberty of doing Chapter 1.
